Hurun lists 14 blockchain entrepreneurs on rich list
The annual Hurun China Rich List for the first time has individuals from the blockchain industry making the list.
The rich list, published by the Hurun Research Institute, says there were 14 individuals from the blockchain industry, also the fastest growing industry.
The cofounders of Bitmain, the bitcoin mining rig manufacturer that just filed for an initial public offering, Zhan Ketuan, 39, and Wu Jihan, 32, led the way. Zhan has an estimated wealth of US$2.4bil while Wu had US$2.3bil.
Rounding up the top three among the blockchain entrepreneurs and investors was crypto exchange Binance founder Zhao Changpeng, 41, with US$2.2bn.
Overall, Zhan of Bitmain was ranked 95th while business partner Wu was ranked 204th. Binance founder Zhao came in at 230th.
According to a press release from Hurun, only 1,893 individuals made the cut in the 2018 list, down 11% from last year, the first drop in the size of the list since 2012.
Hurun chairman and chief researcher Rupert Hoogewerf says: “A 20% drop in the stock exchange, on the back of a slowing economy and the US-China trade war, resulted in 456 drop-offs this year, the highest since records began twenty years ago”.
OKex crypto exchange founder Star Xu, 33, came in at 354th with US$1.45bil while another crypto exchange founder, Li Lin, 36, was ranked 556th with estimated wealth of US$1.01bil.
Also ranked at 556th was Li Xiaolai, the founder of BitFund, with an estimated wealth of US$1.01bil.
Others in the list included bitcoin mining manufacturers Canaan Creative founder Zhang Nangeng and Ebang founder Hu Dong.
Those on the list must have a minimum wealth of US$290mil, with the calculations made as of Aug 15.
